Blog Session 8: A subject you've enjoyed studying this semester

As most of you know, I studied translation before becoming a teacher, and I would like to write about those times. Studying translation was difficult because many of my classmates discovered that they didn't like translation during our third year, the year that we start to seriously translate. That same year, I discovered I really liked translating, we had a subject called "general translation" where we had to translate non-technical texts into Spanish, I loved it, because we were encouraged not to think only about the words, but the contexts, and to translate according to meanings and not word by word, following the different grammar of the languages we were studying. I had to put into practice the other classes we had had, such as grammar (English and Spanish), as well as culture and of course language. The teacher made us investigate the topic of the text, we had to learn a lot about different topics, that even though they were general it was very useful. We also had to investigate about the words that we used in Spanish, why "this word" instead of "that word", and we needed to have good reasons for choosing one word over the other.
The good thing is that I was really good at it. My teacher always asked for my comments in class, because she knew that I investigated a lot before my translations. I have to say that it was a very good experience, not only because I was good, but also because my classmates and I shared our knowledge, we didn't compete with each other, we always tried to help one another, if somebody found a web page or a glossary that was good we shared it, and I feel that it was so good for me, because I'm very competitive and this class taught me to share knowledge, which I believe is one of the most important concepts of being a teacher today.
What about you?

Blog Session 7: My favorite Food

I still remember the first time I ate lasagna, I was a little girl and I was visiting my great-grandparents (my mother’s grandparents on her mother’s side) here in Santiago, I was wearing a beautiful dress, I believe it was white or a very light color and a plate was presented to me at lunch, I didn’t know what it was and I asked “what’s this?” “lasagna”, said my great grandmother. I’ve always been very picky, and I looked at the plate with suspicion, but once I started to eat I completely fell in love with this amazing dish, and since then I’m always looking for the perfect lasagna to eat. Of course, that day my dress suffered the consequences and my mother was not happy.

I love Italian food in general, but the lasagna was my first love, probably a close second is gnocchi, but I don’t remember the first time I ate them.
Lasagna is made with thin dough cooked with Bolognese sauce, white sauce, and cheese, all together in the most wonderful mixture of flavors. At least, that is the classic lasagna, my favorite.
